MUSIC SAMPLING WITHOUT PERMISSION IS CRIMINAL – KWESI ERNEST

Young artists these days keep referring to the old ones as people’s who time had passed, yet they shamefully, steal songs of these legends to make hit songs!

The CEO of |Media Excel Productions, Mr. Kwesi Ernest has vented spleen on young musicians who deliberately sample other people’s songs without going through the proper procedure.
In a radio discussion on the biggest entertainment morning shows in the country, Daybreak Hitz, on HITZFM 103.9, in Accra, Mr. Ernest minced no words in calling all musicians, who go out of their ways to sample other people’s songs, go through all  the rudiments for releasing a song, and refuse to seek clearance from the original owners of the song, as CRIMINAL!

Mr. Kwesi Ernest, who is a music producer, Marketer, promoter and Manager, who has worked with the likes of Becca, Joyce Blessings, Ruthy, SP Kofi Sarpong, Elder Francis Adjei, et al, took time to explain the pains people go through to record and release songs these days. HE added in lamentations, the amount of resources that go into this whole process, and doesn’t understand why somebody, could just wake up one day to sample songs without the approval from the right owners.

The discussion came about on the back of a recent similar outburst by high life legend, Oheneba Kissi. Ghanaian high life artist Oheneba Kissi in an ongoing meeting has uncovered that there is no regard in the music business and that is the reason the youthful performers are sampling songs anyhow.

He said;
“It’s worrying. If it’s abroad there is respect. We call it cover version. One can use the whole song but you will be notified with a letter that your song want to be used. With that you can tell the person that you can use the song but you can’t transfer the copyright to your kids because I have it. Even 70 years after my death my children will still have the copyright of my songs so you can’t use it. This kind of arrangement is not working in Ghana but we are trying. It’s not best to do that knowing the song belongs to someone and it’s his right. It will be worrying if you say you will take them to court”.

Oheneba Kissi is known for his hit songs like ”ABC of love”, Mante wo nka and a lot more.
