During the Christmas festives Ghana saw the visit of so many tourists, coming into the country. Most of these tourist had come from different professional backgrounds. Amongst these were a team of Hollywood STARS, led by American born Ghanaian actor, Boris Kodjoe.
The purpose of their travel was to trace back their roots and get acquainted with their family lineages. Apart from these they also had purposed to tour the country and also have a lot of fun. This was the first time any of such purpose driven Hollywood STARS, came down to Ghana.
Since the team comprised of filmmakers largely, many stakeholders of the Ghana film industry had expected that some sort of meetings and networking with the local film industry would have been part of the agenda of the Hollywood STARS’ visit. That unfortunately never happened.
Some film stars like Prince David Osei have expressed their disappointment at the Minister and the ministry for not making this event more beneficial to the Ghanaian film industry.
Chinyere Yvonne Okoro, in a question asked her by Andy Dosty, host if Daybreak Hitz on Hitzfm, 103.9, slighted her disappointment at the whole event too. She said she had hosted the minister on her TV cooking show during which the minister explained that Ghana had no major involvement in the Hollywood STARS’ visit. She add the Minister, Mrs Catherine Ablema Afeku- said her her show that Ghana spent nothing in their visit and that the Hollywood stars fully funded their trip.
Asked of the relevance of the visits to the film industry, Yvonne states she only knows it beneftted tourism as the minster had stated on her TV cooking show, apart from that she didn’t see any other benefits it gave the film industry.
Asked whether she had the opportunity to meet the Hollywood stars, Yvonne said NO, but she heard some local filmmakers had some sort of dinner with the stars.
Andy Dosty asked her if she attended the dinner. Yvonne had this to say ; ” I wasn’t invited, so how could I have been there? I can’t attend an event I have not been invited to?”
Last year, Mr. Boris Kodjoe, actor of the world acclaimed movie ADDICTION, visited the minister of tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Catherine Ablema Afeku- to announce his and his wife’s interest in bringing to Ghana some Hollywood stars for fun trips, tourism and exchange programs. The reason for his visit was also to see how cooperate Ghana could be brought on board to sponsor the event and how the Ministry could also support the program.
After the meeting the Minister for Tourism suggested to Kodjoe if he could be Ghana’s film industry ambassador in the U.S.A to help grow the local industry.
