10 film sequels to look out for in 2019

10 film sequels to look out for this year, 2019

“Glass” – Jan. 18

Director M. Night Shyamalan shocked audiences when his sleeper hit film “Split” turned out to be a backdoor sequel to his most acclaimed offering, 2000’s “Unbreakable.” Now, “Glass.” the third film in the series, brings David Dunn (Bruce Willis), Kevin and his many personalities (James McAvoy) and Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), to fully realize Shyamalan’s grounded universe of superheroes and villains.

“The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” – Feb. 8

Following the surprise smash hit “The Lego Movie,” the gang’s all here for “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.” In this installment, Emmit (Chris Pratt) and his fellow pieces face off against Duplo invaders. The residents of Bricksburg are under siege as their home is turned into an ill-fitting wasteland, with hope and time running out.

“Happy Death Day 2U” – Feb. 14

Surprisingly funny and dark, 2017’s “Happy Death Day” was far better than it deserved to be, anchored by star Jessica Rothe, who returns in this sequel which promises to raise the stakes as sequels often do. Hopefully the film’s “Groundhog Day”-type motif is as successful this time around as it was in the sleeper hit original.

“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” – Feb. 22

Once upon a time, Dreamworks Animation and Pixar were running neck and neck for animation supremacy, and while Pixar won that battle long ago, of the more successful Dreamworks franchises, “How to Train Your Dragon” has endured and even thrived as the latest installment in the series, “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” follows an adult Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) in his role as chief of Berk and the growing rift between him and his pet dragon as a new threat emerges that could wipe out all dragons once and for all.

“Avengers 4” – May 3

While it may not yet have a real title, the second half of the Infinity Stone saga, “Avengers 4” certainly has its hand in our collective wallets as audiences are waiting with baited breath to see how a film can follow up the shocking end of last year’s “Avengers: Infinity War” with more thrills and an even larger threat than the returning Snappy McThanos (Josh Brolin). You won’t find a production more tight lipped about its story, but it’s likely this is the swan song for MCU vets Robert Downey, Jr and Mr. Real Life Captain America (on Twitter) Chris Evans.

“John Wick 3: Parabellum” – May 17

It started with a dead dog from a dead wife, but now the melancholy assassin extraordinaire John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run with an entire city of assassins on his trail in “John Wick 3: Parabellum,” the reported final chapter in the underdog action series. Making their first appearances in the series, Halle Berry and Angelica Huston are joined by returning scenery chewers Laurence Fishburne and Ian McShane.

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” – May 31

Even though 2014’s “Godzilla” remake didn’t quite live up to the hype, it’s hard to say no to radioactive fire-breathing monsters, and in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” we get the return of some of Toho’s most famous kaiju, including Rodan, Mothra and King Gidorah. Millie Bobby Brown of “Stranger Things” is in the lead along with Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga. But let’s face it: We’re going to be here for the monsters, as well we should be

“Toy Story 4” – June 21

The original “Toy Story” served as the rock upon which Pixar firmly established itself as the premier animation studio and a film that former studio head John Lassiter swore would be a one-of-a-kind film. However, because money never sleeps, 22 years later, “Toy Story 4” is ready to fill our cockles with warm nostalgia… and a completely perplexing trailer that features a plastic spoon that swears he’s not a toy, making the immediate hope that this is someone’s soul transferred into a spoon, setting up… wait, this is a Pixar film. It’s for families, not sadists. Although, the toys did nearly get eaten by a furnace in “Toy Story 3,” so… maybe?

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” – July 5

Picking up mere moments from the end of “Avengers 4,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home” features a (spoiler alert) non-disintegrated Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he faces what could be his second deadliest foe (because Thanos), Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in addition to a number of other classic villains, including possibly Hydro Man

“Kingsman 3” – Nov. 8

First, let’s get the bad news out of the way: Taron Egerton will not be back as Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin in the upcoming “Kingsman 3.” Why? It’s a prequel. Unfortunately, that’s all we know at this point, although there are rumors that the action takes place around World War I, so this is a production that will predate and exclude the rest of the cast as well. The film is still in pre-production and no casting announcements have made, so we’ll just have to see which man (or woman) “manners will maketh” next.
